GUN-SHOTS

On 25th of May 2006, at about 10: 30 AM, loud explosion and sporadic gunfire were heard from the direction of the PNTL Headquarters and lasted for more than an hour. UNPOL Duenas who was inside the PNTL headquarters relayed the information about the situation at PNTL headquarters by Radio to Mr. Malik. Mr. Duenas informed Malik that PNTL officers suffered five casualties and were ready for ceasefire but do not want to surrender.

At Obrigado barracks, a team of UNPOL and MTA negotiated with General Matan Ruak of the FDTL for the safe passage of Police Officers who were at the PNTL Headquarters. After arriving to the PNTL Headquarters, Lt. Col. Mann organized the PNTL officers for March-Off to Obrigado barracks while their firearms were being collected and kept in one of the UNPOL car. Some of the PNTL officers were reluctant to turn-in their weapons for the fear that the F-FDTL may fire upon them but were convinced and eventually laid down their weapons.

While PNTL were being formed on the road in front of the PNTL Headquarters, Lt.Col David Mann with two other UNPOLs proceeded to the intersection at the Ministry of Justice Compound where the six (6) F-FDTL were positioned and talked to them. When the PNTL were organized in three (3) columns and were ready to march-off, eight UN vehicles positioned themselves on either side of the road sandwiching them while other UNPOLs marched along with. When they approached the gate of the Ministry of Justice, one of the F-FDTL was seen uneasy and agitated. The PNTL continued marching but in a hurried pace when they were abreast with the soldiers on both side of the road. The uneasy and agitated soldier seemed to recognize somebody from the columns, made big stride towards the PNTL, fired one shot followed by three (3) succeeding automatic gunshots. Soon, there was the sound of ear-breaking shots. Approximately, more than 50 rounds were heard being shot by the left side of the road. The PNTL officers were falling down. There were screams and cries from the injured PNTL. The man who initially fired the shot was between 30-35 years old; medium built and was without headgear. Duenas shouted “CEASEFIRE” three times. When the bullet sound stopped, there were many wounded PNTL crying for help on the road, some were dead on the spot. Board of Inquiry (BOI) was established to investigate the incident. ARSON

At 2100 hours on Friday 15th September 2000 an Albanian male called Mentor, who lives in Pristina, at Grid reference 136 247, heard a knock at the front door of his house. When he opened it, he saw three masked men standing there. One of these men grabbed hold of him, held a hunting knife to his throat, and told Mentor, in Albanian, not to move or he would be killed. The other two men then entered his house and started to destroy the living-room furniture with a large hammer, which they had with them. The taller of the two men was dressed in green combat clothing and a red ski mask, and the shorter man was wearing blue trousers, a white jacket and a blue ski mask, all three were speaking Serbian to each other. When the two men had finished breaking the living-room furniture, they went upstairs and continued to destroy the furniture there. Later the shorter man in the white jacket came down the stairs and ran outside, returning shortly afterwards carrying a red plastic container. He poured petrol from the container over the broken living-room furniture and the tall man then set the furniture alight. The three men started to laugh and the one holding Mentor told him, in Albanian, that it was time the Albanians knew what it was like to have their homes destroyed. Mentor tried to break free but was pushed to the ground and kicked in the stomach a number of times. The house was starting to fill with smoke, the tall man told him not to report the incident or they would cut his throat. The three men then ran from the house laughing. Mentor was able to crawl from the house into the street, where he saw, about one hundred meters down the street, the three men standing under a streetlight talking to another male person, who was giving them money. The three men then got into a white Alfa Romeo driving off in the direction of the hospital and the other person walked away towards the town center. The Fire services arrived about five minutes later, by which time the house was well on fire, with flames leaping through the roof.
