Armed Robbery
It was
reported on 08 September 2012 at about 03.30 hrs that Francisco
Da Silva Andrade, Timorese nationality, United Nations Volunteer (UNV)
working with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the
Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), serving in the Communication
and Information Technology Section (CITS) in Goma, was attacked
by two suspects
including one armed with a pistol in the Volcan neighborhood. He was shot with one bullet while
he was returning home from a small shop near a night club after
buying a prepaid telephone card.
On 09
September, the victim was discharged from hospital and was sent home at 46
Sandy Road, Goma. MONUSCO security officer, Mr. James Frank along with UNPOL Mary Jones met the victim who stated that at 02.30 hrs he left
home to purchase the prepaid phone card although the area was dangerous for UN
staff. On the way back at 03.30 hrs, two individuals, the
first attacker was about 30 years old, around 180
cm tall, had light skin, a thick moustache and beard and was wearing a
black shirt and blue jeans, and the second who was carrying a pistol was nearly 20 years old, approximately
160 cm tall, had dark skin, a light beard and was dressed in a military camouflaged
shirt and green military-type pants followed him and shot in, his leg. After he fell down bleeding, the attackers demanded the money, and he gave
them 150 US Dollars and some amount of Congolese
francs. Mr. Qunicy
Adams, the neighbor, who witnessed the shooting from his balcony, arrived at the scene and called the police from his cell phone. The perpetrators panicked and ran off with the money.
After around 10 minutes, MONUSCO security officers and the police along with an
ambulance arrived at the scene. The victim was transported to the MONUSCO hospital as he was beginning to lose consciousness due to the
trauma and heavy loss of blood.
On IO September at I 0.00 hrs, during the interview, Mr. Quincy Adams stated to UNPOL
officer Mary Jones that he heard one shot fired from his balcony and
noticed two individuals attacking the victim, asking for money, and threatening
to kill him if he did not comply. After his presence, the offenders rushed
from the scene towards an old white Toyota Corolla with no
registration plates and broken rear lights and drove off. Then, he rushed to
the victim to provide first aid to stop
severe bleeding from his left leg. One of the attackers seemed to
be Jack Thonga, a well-known thief who was released recently
from prison. MONUSCO police officers and four UN police arrived and obtained information from
him about the victim and cordoned off the crime scene. They
collected a 9 mm bullet shell and some hair samples mixed with blood as evidence and sent
them to the forensic laboratory. The ambulance arrived
afterwards, and the victim was rushed to MONUSCO hospital for further treatment. The
investigations were continuing.
